JUST IN: GES committed to pursuing STEAM in schools

GES committed to pursuing STEAM in schools – Commissions the Accra High STEAM Centre.

The Ghana Education Service in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has commissioned the Accra High STEAM Centre.

The Centre which is part of the government’s efforts to transform Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) education in pre-tertiary schools, is one (1) out of the twenty (20) STEAM Centres sited in communities across the nation at various levels of completion.

Speaking at the commissioning of the facility, the Acting Director General of GES said, “We at GES are particularly excited about these STEAM Centres because they aim to improve STEAM Education at the pre-tertiary and create a pipeline of learners for STEM education at the tertiary level.”

“The Accra High STEAM Centre has been resourced to offer the latest platforms, programmes, and technologies for students to explore, build and share their understanding of the world around them. In contrast, the more playful aspects of the resources keep them motivated to keep learning, in and out of the classroom,” he added.

In addition, GES has trained exceptional facilitators who will guide students at the Accra High STEAM Centre to explore game development, coding, electronics, robotics, and character design topics.

The construction of twenty (20) STEAM Centres across the country adds to ongoing efforts by the Akufo-Addo led government through the Ministry of Education, in expanding and resourcing the science laboratories of existing Senior High Schools to increase their capacity to admit more science students, as well as building new resource centers where a school has none.

The Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum who commissioned the facility lauded the Israeli Government, Robo Group, and the Science Education Unit of GES for playing leading roles to deliver the Accra High STEM Centre for the benefit of the Ghanaian child and encouraged all students to make the best use of the facility which is open every weekday to all pre-tertiary schools within Greater Accra.

In attendance were the Deputy Director-General in charge of Quality and Access, Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, Director of the Science Education Unit, Mrs. Olivia Serwaa Opare, Director Human Resource Management Department, Madam Angela Frimpomaa Nkansah, Director Administration Mrs. Adwoa Osabea Oduro-Konadu and other dignitaries and stakeholders.
